Our Second Dog-Friendly Cabin in Broken Bow: Opening Update

We are on track to close on our second Lazy Pines cabin in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, by October 28, 2026.

Once we close, we have a few weeks of renovations and improvements planned before welcoming our first guests.

We’re currently expecting a limited December 2026 opening, even if we’re still putting a few final nonessential touches on the cabin. One thing is certain: our first December guests will get the full Lazy Pines Christmas treatment. The cabin will absolutely be decorated for the holidays.

We’re getting closer!

What’s Happening at Lazy Pines Broken Bow

I think we’ve officially lost our marbles.

The mosquitoes have been particularly bad at the cabin, so I called our pest-control company to ask about additional treatment.

The recommendation I received was definitely not what I expected:

Buy a six-pack of beer. Warm it up. Spray it around the yard.

Apparently, the theory is that mosquitoes won’t like the smell of the yeast.

Naturally, I’ve asked our yard guy to conduct this highly scientific Lazy Pines experiment.

Will it work?

Was she yanking my chain?

We’ll report back.

Important disclaimer: This is an experiment and a funny cabin-owner story, not our recommended method of mosquito control!

Lazy Pines Broken Bow is located in the Broken Bow/Hochatown area of southeastern Oklahoma, close to Beavers Bend State Park and Broken Bow Lake. The cabin also has a fully fenced private yard, which makes outdoor time considerably easier when traveling with dogs.

What’s New at Our Dog-Friendly Cabins in East Texas

No one is nearly as excited about this as I am, but after three years, I think we’ve FINALLY fixed the water at our Texas cabins.

The municipal water in the area has always required a robust filtration system. Our previous setup was filtering the water, but it wasn’t removing all of the tannins that can cause discoloration.

We installed an entirely new system…and the water was still discolored.

Several visits and phone calls later, we discovered that the wrong filtration tank had been installed.

A few more weeks, another tank and plenty of patience later:

We have crystal-clear water again!

Not exactly glamorous cabin news, but when you’ve spent three years trying to solve something, it feels worthy of a celebration.

Our Latest Pine Tree Project

Separately, I’m becoming far more knowledgeable about pine beetles than I ever expected.

We’ve dealt with beetle problems around our New Mexico cabin before, and now we’ve found signs of beetle activity in a few trees at the Texas property.

I’m currently working with Texas A&M resources to identify exactly what type of beetle we’re dealing with and determine the best way to protect the surrounding trees.

Management options can depend on the specific pest and condition of the tree, so identifying the problem correctly comes first.

I hate cutting down even one pine tree, so yes – I’m currently fairly obsessed with finding the best solution.

Our two Texas cabins sit on seven wooded acres in the Pineywoods of East Texas near Corrigan, about 90 minutes north of Houston, so keeping those pine trees healthy matters enormously to us.
