Grindstone Lake
Located just a short drive from Lazy Pines, you could spend an entire day at Grindstone Lake! The lake is regularly stocked with fish, making it a favorite spot for fishing. Beyond fishing, you can enjoy paddle boarding, kayaking, and boating. There are hiking trails, mountain biking, and horseback riding. In the summer there is a water trampoline park. Alto Lake
A tranquil spot with mountain views, Alto Lake is just 2 miles from Lazy Pines. Because it’s so close, it’s our favorite spot to walk the dogs. The lake is stocked with fish all year long and we see avid fishermen even in the winter months. There is a .5 mile walking trail around the lake, and then another 1.5 mile trail called Eagle Creek that winds through the forest with a hidden waterfall! There are picnic tables so you can enjoy a picnic lunch! Insider Tip: Wild horses enjoy this lake too and sunrise is usually the best time to spot them!
Mescalero Lake
Located at Inn of the Mountain Gods, Mescalero Lake is the most exciting lake to visit. Take a walk around the lake, golf at the public course, enjoy paddles boats, go zip lining, or rent bikes! There’s horseback riding, disc golf, and fishing. During the busy summer months, you’ll want to make reservations for most activities in advance. Those who enjoy being indoors, can try their luck at the large casino or grab a bite at one of the many property restaurants. Insider Tip: Either bike or walk the paved fitness trail located across the street. The bike rental shop can tell you how to find it. It’s quite hilly – so plan accordingly.
Bonito Lake
Bonito Lake re-opened for fishing in 2024 after being closed for 12 years after the Little Bear fire. After snapping some photos of this alpine lake, check out the wonderful hiking trails such as Big Bonito Trail. Insider Tip: Cell service is spotty in the area, so plan your route in advance.
