Ruidoso Trails: Moon Mountain

If you’re visiting Ruidoso and looking for the perfect trails to explore with your pup, you’re in luck! There are so many great trails in and around the area that offer scenic views, easy access, and a welcoming environment for dogs. Here are some of our favorites that are close to Lazy Pines, easy to find, dog-friendly, and not too difficult!

Trail information has been updated since the June 2024 wildfires.

Alto Lake Loop

Just 2 miles from Lazy Pines, this is the closest trail to the cabin. It’s approximately half a mile around the lake and is easy enough for the whole family (very flat). On the east side of the lake, you’ll find a connecting trail called Eagle Creek Trail. It’s about two miles long, featuring forest views, wildlife sightings, some interesting bridges, and sometimes there’s a waterfall! (Reopened February 2025 after the wildfires.)

Cedar Creek Trails

Located within the Lincoln National Forest, Cedar Creek Trails are just six miles from Lazy Pines. This area offers multiple well-groomed trails with easy parking, making it a great spot for a peaceful hike among the pines.

Ruidoso River Trail (The Fairy Trail)

Also known as “Two Rivers Park,” this paved trail is just 8 miles from Lazy Pines and follows the river with plenty of shade. It’s nicknamed the Fairy Trail because, in the summer, tiny fairy and troll houses appear at the base of trees along the path! (June 2024 Update: Open, but a flood washed out one of the bridges.)

Moon Mountain

Just 7 miles from Lazy Pines, Moon Mountain is more than just a hiking destination—it’s an outdoor recreation area with an 18-hole disc golf course and over 600 acres of trails to explore. With more than 5 miles of hiking options, this spot offers incredible views and a fun terrain for adventure seekers. It’s also a great spot for reactive dogs, as there’s plenty of space to navigate off the trails & around other people and dogs.

Grindstone Lake

Only 8 miles from Lazy Pines, this scenic lake features a trail that follows the shoreline, plus five additional adjacent trails for even more exploring! Easy parking makes this a hassle-free stop, and in the summer, the Wibit Water Park offers extra fun at the lake. It’s one of the best places to let pups swim with multiple shallow access points. (Note: Parking fees apply from May to September.)

Perk Ridge Trail

For a more serene hiking experience, Perk Ridge Trail is a fantastic choice at just 9 miles from Lazy Pines. This stunning trail meanders alongside a stream and through gorgeous pine trees. If you’re lucky, you might even spot Ruidoso’s famous wild horses! It’s about 3 miles long (5.5 miles out and back), making it a great option for a moderate adventure.

Mescalero Lake

Located 11 miles from Lazy Pines, this picturesque lake is part of the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort & Casino. You can park by the lake and enjoy a relaxing walk along the shoreline or rent bikes to explore the paved bike/walk trail nearby, which offers breathtaking mountain views. You can spend an entire day here: paddleboat, zipline, rent bikes, horseback ride, golf, eat, or try your luck at the casino!

Big Bonito Trail

A bit further out at 14 miles from Lazy Pines, Big Bonito Trail is absolutely worth the drive! This stunning trail features babbling brooks, towering trees, and unique rock formations. It’s a fantastic choice for more experienced hikers looking to immerse themselves in Ruidoso’s natural beauty. Note: You’ll also see it called Argentina Canyon Trail on maps and signage. (Cell service is limited, so be sure to download a map beforehand!)
